Abstract

Laboratory Animals Journal (LAJ) is a prestigious and widely respected international journal of laboratory animal science and welfare. It is published in six issues per year, including one issue with mini-reviews on a special topic.
LAJ publishes peer-reviewed original papers and reviews on all aspects of the use of animals in biomedical research. The journal promotes improvements in the welfare and well-being of laboratory animals, and particularly focuses on research that reduces the number of animals used or replaces animal models with alternative methods.
LAJ is looking to appoint two editors to assist current editors in managing the editorial process and in the review process. The editorial team is assisted by an editorial board with section editors. The responsibilities of an editor include an initial overview of manuscripts to assess overall suitability for the journal, to ensure adherence to ARRIVE guidelines fitting the scope of the journal and to select the most appropriate section editor for ongoing handling and review of manuscripts. Editors have equal rights and responsibilities. The editor assesses the recommendations of reviewers and section editors, and makes a final decision on whether manuscripts should be accepted for publication. He/she will also write editorials for the journal, and will participate in the selection of the Editor’s Choice and selection of special topics. The editors will operate in close collaboration with SAGE, the publisher of LAJ.
The successful candidate will have a background in the field of laboratory animal science, and will also have experience in writing and submitting manuscripts for publication and in conducting critical reviews of manuscripts submitted for publication. Experience as a member of an editorial board or a section editor is preferred but not essential.
As with other appointees of Laboratory Animals Limited (LAL), the editor will work on a voluntary basis but will be reimbursed for all out-of-pocket expenses associated with the position. He/she is invited to attend LAL’s Council of Management meetings as required.
The publication of LAJ is overseen by LAL, a registered charity whose aims are to promote education and training in laboratory animal science. LAL funds a range of initiatives in the field of laboratory animal science, including bursaries to attend training courses, funding for speakers at scientific meetings and financial assistance for workshops and other events in a variety of topics related to laboratory animal science, technology and welfare.
