Abstract

FELASA is the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations and a LAL Association Member. It is a recognised and respected representative of Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) in Europe and beyond. However, FELASA may mean different things to different people, organisations and countries. When asked about FELASA’s notable achievements, its National Association members cited among other things its collaborative work, including support for new associations, to promote high LAS standards and contribution to raise LAS education standards. FELASA Membership allows its Member Associations to be in contact with a broad community of specialist scientists in the field of LAS and facilitates the exchanging of ideas and experiences.
FELASA promotes best practice in LAS and animal welfare and sets widely recognised standards for scientists involved in animal research thanks to:
working groups on key topics; recommendations on health monitoring; guidelines and reports on animal welfare and ethical review; American Association for Laboratory Animal Science–FELASA working group liaisons, including a report on harm–benefit analysis of animal studies; a worldwide recognised course accreditation scheme for education and training to promote best practice and endorse the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement); recommendations for education and training (originally on FELASA Categories A, B, C and D and later to be superseded by recommendations on the EU Functions); Severity Classification Workshops, supported and partially funded by FELASA; since 1981, the organisation of triennial congresses that offer continuing education opportunities for delegates; and developments of links across Europe and beyond with associations and governmental bodies.
All of FELASA’s activities remain true to its mission to promote best practice in LAS and animal welfare and this will continue as FELASA embarks on its next 40 years in serving the LAS community.
