Preschool education of exceptional children in the Soviet Union differs in some important respects from education in the United States. The beginning of formal first grade instruction starts at 7 years of age. There is a categorical approach to the education of handicapped children. The preschool education is an integral part of ideological indoctrination.
This article provides a sample of research with the mentally retarded preschoolers and is based on recently published studies Defectologia.
