Abstract
This study examines the extent and evolution of status offenses among fourteen- to eighteen-year-old adolescents in a large urban area. It then looks at the relationship between this behavior and more serious delinquent acts and examines the associa tion between deterrence and status offenses. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) Status offense is a legal term without meaning; (2) PINS laws should be restrict ed to environmental situations and all behavioral components should be eliminated from these laws; and (3) adolescence should be perceived as a process rather than as a status.
