This study examines the geographic distribution of all reported shootings by New
York City police officers during the years 1971-75 (n = 2,746) and indices of police
exposure to violent crime (rates of arrest for violent felonies) and public safety
(rates of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter). The research finds that both
these indices are closely related to police shooting rates. The theoretical and administrative implications of these findings are then discussed.
