Abstract
An international survey of individuals in the peace field was undertaken to determine whether there is similarity in the images belonging to the field. When examining peace concepts, significant contributors, mentors, optimism for peace and research areas, groups based on field identification, region, age and sex were compared. The 133 responses to the survey undertaken in 1982-83 indicate that none of the groups is isolated from the others. There is an established group of individuals who give coherence to the peace field as noted by responses to mentor and significant contributor questions. Outstanding among these is Johan Galtung. There is also a predominant definition of peace as negative and positive peace. Likewise, research areas for the different groups are interrelated. Given the results of this survey, there is ostensible similarity in images of the peace field. This allows for substantial communication and indicates a unified field rather than divisive schools.
