The Anatomy of Imperialism: The Case of the Multinational Mining Corporations in Peru

Abstract

This article studies the functioning and the changing character of imperialism and how it affects the people subjugated to it. This is done through an historical analysis of the mining sector of a so-called underdeveloped country, Peru.

The study shows the details of the methods of exploitation of modern multinational corporations, and demonstrates the intimate links existing between the 'national' bourgeoisie in Peru and foreign capital. In light of recent developments in Peru, including the massacre of 25 mining workers by Peruvian police and troopers, the conclusion is drawn that liberation from the yoke of imperialism in Peru must depend on the strength of the working class alone and on the future possibility of its leading the exploited sectors of the Peruvian people in a socialist revolution.
