Abstract
Defines character disorders from the perspective of early attachment difficulties and draws upon John Bowlby's studies of difficulties in the bonding process during the first years of life. Employs subject of adoption illustratively to demonstrate how the unique cluster of problems surrounding adoption may be understood in terms of possible characterological problems. Offers theological reflections concerning how a pastoral psychotherapist may understand salvation for people who struggle with attachment issues. Concludes with observations about the utility of treatment approaches which may be useful with these people.
