Abstract
Examines relationships between changes in experiences of faith and changes in psychotherapy. Uses James Fowler's theories of the development of faith to compare the two experiences; and interprets psychotherapy from a theological perspective. Draws on object relations theories of Harry Guntrip and William Fairbairn to focus on the presence of a psychotherapist in a transference relationship. Claims that this presence is a symbolic representative of a transcendent presence—a way of expressing an incarnational theology in which the psychotherapist becomes a transitional object which points beyond itself.
