Abstract
Observes that the developmental usefulness which children find in patienthood continues in later life, and illustrates this tendency with special references to cancer patients. Describes ways in which family members may become helpers; and how clergy, if they have not sufficiently resolved developmental conflicts associated with being ill, may tend to see patients more as problematic objects than whole persons.
