Abstract
Four indexes of test scatter were examined for the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) within the standardization sample of 1,200 children between the ages of 4 and 6 1/2 years. Normative data were developed and presented for interpreting Verbal-Performance IQ discrepancies, the range (highest minus lowest subtest scaled score), the number of subtests deviating from the mean of all subtests for a given child, and frequency of significant differences between each possible pair of subtests. Results were generally similar to previous studies of the WISC-R for older children. What were previously believed to be unusual amounts of within test variability of performance for individual children were found to characterize the profiles of many normally functioning children.
