Abstract
This two-part article gives a concise description of the PL 94-142 regulations. Part 1 has suggestions for implementing the regulations and Part 2 regards the components of an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The legal requirements are reviewed and step-by-step procedures described for legal compliance, for developing useful IEPs, and for effective administration. No official government endorsement was sought or is implied though the overview is believed to be accurate and authoritative. — G.M.S.
This paper examines the IEP as a basis for defining appropriate education. A discussion of required IEP components provides educators with a framework in which to view the process of IEP development. State and local education agencies, who have the responsibility of guiding a systematic development of an IEP providing a practical and workable program, may find the suggestions helpful. Others may find the suggestions can contribute to a systematic approach for providing appropriate education to handicapped students through the specifications of the IEP.
