The “hyperactive child” syndrome presents many problems with respect to diagnosis and research. Several theoretical formulations about the relationship of the CNS to hyperactivity suggest it may be due to a disruption in the cortical excitation-inhibition cycle. However, there is as yet little conclusive evidence linking specific neuronal events to the overt behavior. There is a need to be aware of the complex, multifaceted nature of the etiology of hyperactivity.
