Abstract
Relatively little has been written about the important topic of the federal-state nature of Australian trade unionism. This paper seeks to contribute to our knowledge of this subject. It is based on research findings from a detailed interview survey of 132 unions. The paper develops a typology for classifying federal and state unions. Within this framework, it then discusses both the trend from state to federal union ism and a contrary move from federal to state unionism. The paper concludes that the trend from state to federal unionism is likely to continue.
