Abstract
Two sets of factors which have been held to influence union members' participa tion in union activities are their general orientations to work and employment, and the organisation of union activities at local level. The relative influences of these two sets of factors were examined by reference to data from a survey of union members' attitudes in four male occupational groups. It was concluded that union involvement depended mainly on work-force solidarism of orientation and on-site union organisation, and that these in turn depended on labour characteristics such as stability and geographical dispersion.
