Abstract
This critique takes issue with some of the central ideas reflected in Schneider’s article. In particular, concerns are raised both about the role of theory rather than historical contributions in shaping human experiences and the complexities involved in the search for an underlying universal sameness within individuals to resolve current social and personal problems. Universalism versus particularism or sameness versus difference is much more complex than Schneider’s article recognizes and presents us with a sorry history of abuses that we should hardly wish to replicate in the years ahead.
