Abstract
Viewing health beyond the concept of the absence of disease has to do with the way we feel and interact with everything around us. When we have the ability to use all of our senses and all aspects of our body, mind, and soul to sort out knowledge, beliefs, concepts, and memories, this wholeness becomes the totality of the universe. In this article, using the sky as the symbol of universal vastness, openness, and nearly unimaginable meaning, the author postulates that this universe cannot be separated from self, health, and the health of all who live. He refers to this concept as inner and outer space-the inner and outer sky. Using personal experiences as well as the experience of others and "primitive" and spiritual traditions, he describes a state of "excruciating aliveness" that is an integrating and health-giving joy. Although he feels that most of us are so caught up in the exigencies of modern times we have created a pathology, a sense of disconnection, he believes that many of us carry secrets of this ecstatic experience that are not part of our daily accepted rational, cognitive, analytical worlds and in them we sense our connectedness to all that exists that affects our lives and well-being.
