Genetic and environmental theories do not account for all the variance in the incidence of schizophrenia. In failing to consider the role of selfdirection, researchers may have excluded a critical area. Literature suggesting that schizophrenics demonstrate some control over their symptoms is reviewed. A variety of theorists are cited to support the view that selfdirection is a significantvariable. Continuingto exclude this variable from research potentially limits our knowledge. Including this variable in research implies revision of current research methods.
