This article describes the 1963 American Mt. Everest Expedition, and the author's participation in it as a psychologist studying personality, compatibility, and stress. It summarizes findings concerning the whole group and then concentrates on the experiences of one of the climbers who reached the summit, concluding with speculations about the motivations and rewards of climbing.
