Abstract
In this interview, clinical psychologist Robert Firestone responds to questions from terror management theorist and researcher Sheldon Solomon regarding the basic concepts in separation theory, an approach that integrates psychoanalytic and existential systems of thought. The topics under discussion include an explanation of the core conflict in life, a description of the fantasy bond, the critical inner voice, Voice Therapy, a cognitive/affective/behavioral methodology that focuses on accessing emotions in countering clients’ destructive thoughts and attitudes, and a case study illustrating the methods applied in individual psychotherapy. There is also a discussion of the “kinds of challenges that people are confronted with today” as contrasted to the past.
