Abstract
This is the personal account of an extraordinary encounter between children of Holocaust survivors and descendants of Nazi perpetrators, a journey that transformed two groups of people separated by an abyss of 6 million dead into a community. Bound and divided by the same tragic moment in history, 14 people discovered the miracle of healing through honest dialogue. Together they cried for their losses and discovered that the truth, however brutal, can set one free. In doing so, they moved from despair to hope and changed their relationship to a tragic history. The encounter brought the two groups into the presence of the horrors of the Holocaust and taught them about a new paradigm of relating that can be turned into knowledge for the next generation. The author learned that healing at a soul level becomes possible in the retelling of one’s tale and having it heard with compassion.
