Abstract
Just as a pitcher and a catcher (or a bowler and a wicket keeper) are joined by the nature of the game, many readers see sport and fiction as inextricably bound. The sporting arena is a place where heroism finds a unique niche. The author explores the character of several characters in two sport-related novels. The brief narrative speaks to the nature of sporting heroism and concludes with the realization that good deeds and self-sacrifice can be achieved by everyday acts of heroism set against the backdrop of elite sport. The author intimates that sporting literature should be made available to students as a priority content area.
