Abstract
This paper discusses aspects of the history, composition, and effects of art. Art is seen as a medium of effecting social change and not only as a means of entertainment. A theatre which portrays collective economic, social, and political issues, rather than individual psychological issues, is presented. This theatre is used as a model in working with student-artists to develop their own plays based upon oral histories, interviews, and original writing. The process of writing, producing, and performing the plays is examined, as is the effect of play-making on the students' historical and social awareness.
