Abstract
The life devoted to teaching pivots upon a delicate balance between public exposure and private introspection. These central but disparate components render teaching unique among professions. Few outside the profession understand the implications of this uniqueness and consequently counteract the necessary balance. In the author's view five articles of faith sustain the teaching profession: that to teach is essentially to inquire; and that such inquiry must be individual, continuous, diverse, and universal. The essay concludes with a scenario that illustrates how these articles might be implemented in school policies to restore teaching to its rightful balance.
