Abstract
When students enter college, they bring with them objects, narratives, memories, hopes and values, and they take on new narratives and values as they study the liberal arts. Students hold complex attitudes toward work, amusement, and leisure, and a liberal arts education can offer, among other things, a clearer understanding that work—“The working life”—embodies the values of courage, honor, and responsibility, and university professors can help students find in their studies vivid images of the ennobling power of work.
