Abstract
In the last twenty years, it has been recognized that professionals may have alcohol, other drug, emotional, marital, family or physical problems that impair their ability to practice their profession. This article traces the history of programs for impaired and distressed professionals; reviews types of program models; describes the New Jersey Impaired Dentists Program as an example of an impaired professionals program; and reviews literature on the effectiveness of treatment for impaired professionals.
