Abstract
This paper reviews the literature on trends in the use of cannabis and cocaine; describes their context of use; and, makes a comparative analysis of data on cannabis and cocaine users. There are many differences between cannabis and cocaine which can be seen in their pharmacology, appearance, method of use and price. However, this study shows that: (1) there is a “connection” between these two substances; (2) cocaine now appears to be occupying a position akin to that of cannabis in the late 1960s; and (3) there are many similarities between the two drug-using groups. Also, it suggests that we should draw upon our more extensive experience with cannabis in any effort to deal with the emergence of increasing cocaine use.
