While the American Criminal Justice System is certainly harsher on drug users than the British, both appear to single out the seller for harshest treatment, and the divergency between the sentencing of sellers and possessors is significantly greater in Great Britian than in the United States. Sharp differences also occur in Great Britain among the severity of sentences for offenses involving different drugs, a factor which cannot be ascertained with available American data. Finally, both systems are more lenient with young offenders and females, and again with the divergency far more pronounced in Great Britain.
