Abstract
Recently, a policy for dealing with alcohol-related criminal offenders is beginning to emerge. The proponents of the policy argue that legal coercion is an effective mechanism in treating alcoholics and in reducing alcohol-related offenses. However, a review of the literature indicates no scientific basis upon which to implement such a policy at the present time. Suggestions for research which would provide a valid basis for evaluating such a policy and the feasiability of its implementation are outlined.
