The major increase in life expectancy this century is due to improved health in the young. Life expectancy for the middle-aged has improved much less. Some of the theoretical causes of aging are reviewed and the possibilities for medical intervention as a means of decelerating aging are considered. Drug treatment has not yet made possible retardation of the aging process but modern drugs are invaluable in the treatment of a variety of deficiency states and diseases associated with aging. Heredity, nutrition, environment and lifestyle are important factors in longevity.
