Abstract
Historically, the subject of drinking in American society has been one of insistent and vocal concern marred by a great deal of misinformation and disagreement. From colonial times to the present, a profusion of arguments has been forwarded either defending or loathing beverage alcohol. This paper reviews the various attempts to control this society's most widely used and abused drug, alcohol.
