The median age of the 4,475 committed persons In the Maryland Correctional System during Fiscal Year 1968 was 24.1, precisely identical to the median of the present study population. However, the study population was much more heavily concentrated in the twenties (age groups 20–29) than the general inmate population; the latter had larger proportions under 20 and at ages 30 and over. Violent and non-violent offenses are classified to include the following:.

Violent: Any armed crime; any crime with deadly weapon; arson: Aggravated assault; felonious assault; assault and battery; assault and striking; assault on police officer; assault with deadly weapon; assault with intent to injure by use of motor vehicle; assault with intent to murder; assault with intent to rob; disorderly conduct: Homicide (any degree); malicious destruction of property; manslaughter (any degree): Possession of deadly weapon: Rape; resisting arrest; and resisting police officer.

Non-violent: Breaking and entering; breaking and entering in the night time: Burglary; forgery; larceny after trust; larceny by trick; grand larceny; maintaining a disorderly house: Prostitution; robbery; soliciting; unauthorized use (of automobile, etc.}; and uttering (bartering in forged prescriptions, checks, or other documents).

The Narcotic Unit files of the Baltimore City Police Department had been in existence for about 17 years at the time of the present study; the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs keeps “current” files for narcotic abusers, covering the most recent five-year period: And the Narcotic Unit files of other police departments have been in existence for shorter periods of time.
