Measurements of the permeability to iodide (Ip) of the outer portion of abraded bovine enamel were found to be related to the pore volume. Intraoral exposure of the enamel produced a rapid decrease in Ip after 0.5 h and a slower decrease during the next three h. This decrease was due to mineralization, and it was shown that the rate of mineralization decreased with a decrease in the pore volume of the enamel.
