Shear and tensile bond strengths of five representative types of acid etch direct bonding adhesives have been compared with their clinical performance using both metal and plastic brackets. Taking the various clinical factors into account, the material with the lowest bond strength- ordinary self-curing acrylic with 20-50% phosphoric acid etchant - was considered to be the best system.
