The predominant cultivable bacteria in the supra-gingival plaque of Old World monkeys were similar to those in human plaque. A significant inter-animal species difference was observed in the absolute and relative concentrations of specific microbial populations. Streptococcus mutans serotype c was found primarily in rhesus plaque and serotype e in cynomolgus plaque.
