Some polymeric polyphosphonates were examined as caries preventives in rats. Caries-susceptible male rats showed about 50% reduction in caries formation after topical treatment with any of the polyphosphonates tested. Because of their low toxicity, these materials may be considered as potential anticariogenic additives to a dentifrice.
