The microstructures of copper- and zinc-containing dental amalgams and nonzinc dental amalgams were examined. The three major phases were distinguishable without etching. The silver-mercury phase exhibited considerable substructure; some of the inclusions found had high concentrations of copper or zinc. Generally, zinc was distributed more uniformly than copper when both were present.
