The reaction of the pulp to the application of fluorides in deep cavities was studied in 50 pairs of teeth. The application of 8% stannous fluoride for five minutes could result in local necrosis and moderate inflammation. No such effects were obtained from either a 30 second application of 8% stannous fluoride, or a five minute application of 4% sodium fluoride.
