Four types of steel were tested, using dental instruments, for changes in hardness as a function of sterilization or disinfection. Steam autoclave, dry heat sterilization, and chemical disinfection were used. Knoop hardness was determined at intervals and data were statistically analyzed. Significant loss of hardness was observed in specific instances.
