Odontogenesis is the earliest expression of ectodermal-ectomesenchymal inductive interaction in the vertebrate fossil record. Other vertebrate integumental skeletal structures are later expressions of homologous interactions, which differ in details but use similar developmental processes. These interactions are specific examples of a more generalized interrelationship between epithelium and mesoderm, which may have phylogenetically preceded the origin of odontogenesis.
