The keratinization of oral mucosa in healthy individuals and in patients with recurrent aphthae or leukoplakia was studied by cytologic methods. On the clinically intact parts of oral mucosa, the minimum number of keratinized cells was found in patients with recurrent aphthae, whereas the maximum number was found in patients with leukoplakia.
