Abstract
A group of metallic compounds known as Nowotny phases, have hexagonal unit cells and atomic arrangement similar to apatite, where the anion groups of the apatite are replaced by single metallic atoms. The compounds show the same variety in composition as apatite. Because of these similarities, Nowotny phases might be used for remineralization or filling materials in dental hard tissue and bone. However, at present, no such compounds both with proper lattice dimensions and with proper chemical stability are known.
