Eleven guinea pigs in advanced stages of pregnancy were given infusions of calcium gluconate and calcium chloride solutions. Fetal and maternal blood samples were collected to determine the influence of acute maternal hypercalcemia on fetal blood calcium levels. The fetal plasma calcium values were not elevated. The relationship between this result and placental transfer mechanisms was discussed.
