The unique absence of tryptophan in dentin collagen and its presence in enamel protein(s) provide a specific biological marker for the study of amelogenesis. Isotopic tryptophan was administered to young rats. The incorporation, distribution, and turnover of the labeled precursor was expressed in auto-radiographs and radiochemically determined specific activitv.
