A method was developed for differentiating homofermentative and heterofermentative lactobacilli in large numbers, using a modified MRS medium with fusidic acid, 10μg/ml. This was the lowest concentration of the antibiotic selective for homofermenters. In saliva, an increase in lactobacilli was accompanied by a concomitant increase in the proportion of heterofermenters.
