Abstract
The solidification behavior in a pressure-infiltrated metal-matrix composite casting system is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The temperature history at various locations within the casting are recorded in situ with a Lab VIEW Data Acquisition system. A correlation established for the heat transfer coefficient at high pressure is used to express the thermal boundary condition on the mold surface. The predicted temperature profiles are in good agreement with the experimental data. The results also indicate that high pressure is required for only a fraction of the duration of the casting.
