The effect of adding an expanding monomer to counteract macroscopic shrinkage of the matrix on the residual stresses in a continuous fiber composite material is examined using a finite element analysis. The fiber volume fraction, expanding monomer fraction, and monomer location are varied. In a limited number of cases, the von Mises stress and the shear stress at the fiber-matrix interface is reduced. However, in most cases, especially as the particle nears the fiber, these stresses are increased dramatically.
