Abstract
A new solution method has recently been developed to analyze the ther mal and structural response of polymeric composites during chemical decomposition. This method extends the numerical approach of previous researchers by including the solution for the structural response of the decomposing material. The method couples the equations of energy, mass transport and momentum and solves these equations simultane ously at each time step. The result is a comprehensive numerical scheme for assessing composite stresses due to chemical decomposition. In this article, the coupled solution method is applied to analyze the response of a glass-phenolic composite during its chemi cal decomposition. Comparisons are made between the numerical results and those ob tained experimentally. In addition to verification of the coupled solution method, the pres ent solution offers additional insight into certain physical events which occur during chemical decomposition.
