Abstract
The experimental observations show that a notched 3D carbon carbon spec imen under tension with large off-axis angles will fail due to shear fracture of the fiber bundle. To analyse the failure mechanism, the stress field in front of the notch tip was computed using the finite element method based on a global-local concept. Finally Zwe ben's statistical strength criterion was employed to predict the notched strength based on the shear strength of fiber bundles measured on a specially designed setup. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results.
