The influence of short term high temperature exposure on mechanical properties of graphite/epoxy (Hercules: AS-4/3501-6) in the immediate vicinity of weldments has been examined. An exposure test simulating a welding process has been developed, and specimens from unidirectional and (0°/90°) laminates were exposed to short term high temperature found adjacent to weldments. The influence of welding parameters on temperature distribution away from the weld for 1/4" and 1/2" thick steel plates was measured.
